The most prominent physiological effect of gibberellins is promoting stem elongation and inducing flowering in long-day plants under short-day conditions. Different plants have varying sensitivities to gibberellins. Genetically dwarf plants, such as dwarf maize and peas, are most sensitive to gibberellins, and after treatment with gibberellins, their stature resembles that of non-dwarf plants; non-dwarf plants, on the other hand, show only slight responses. In some plants, the genetic cause of dwarfism is a lack of endogenous gibberellins (though this is not the case for all). Gibberellins play a regulatory role in seed germination. In many cereal plants, such as barley, the starch in seeds is rapidly hydrolyzed during germination; if the embryo is removed, starch does not hydrolyze. Treating seeds without embryos with gibberellins restores starch hydrolysis, demonstrating that gibberellins can substitute for the embryo in inducing starch breakdown. Gibberellins can substitute for red light to promote the germination of light-sensitive seeds, such as lettuce, and can replace vernalization required for flowering in carrots.
